Tuungane CBO Launches Holistic Youth Empowerment Project to Transform Young Women’s Futures in Kilifi South

A wave of optimism swept through Mtomondoni, Mtwapa on 15th September 2025, as we at Tuungane CBO, in partnership with SHOFCO, officially launched the Youth Voice and Empowerment Project. This bold initiative is designed to equip young women in Kilifi South with the skills, confidence, and resilience to shape their own futures.

We believe that every young woman deserves the chance to dream, learn, and thrive. That’s why this one-year program doesn’t stop at vocational training in tailoring, fashion, and design. It also combines football coaching, mentorship, life skills development, and mental health support. By merging sports and skills, we’re creating a space where young women can explore their talents, build leadership capacity, and grow their sense of self-belief.

The launch was alive with energy. Government officials, civil society organizations, religious leaders, and community members gathered to celebrate this milestone, sharing in our vision of a future shaped by empowered young women. Our Head of Partnerships, Diana Abucheli, set the tone for the day:

“True empowerment comes from collective action. Together with our partners and community, we can transform the lives of young women in Kilifi South.”

As the first 15 participants were welcomed into the program, their excitement was palpable. Agate Titia Haron captured the spirit of the day:

“This project gives me hope and opens up new opportunities. I want to build a fashion and design business, support my family, and inspire other girls in my community to pursue their dreams too.”

Voices from our partners and community leaders reinforced the importance of this initiative. Mr. Stephen George from SHOFCO highlighted why sports remain central to our approach:

“Never leave the aspect of sport in everything you do, as it is your niche. In two years, we want to return here and find a vibrant Youth Empowerment Hub shaping lives across Kilifi County.”

The urgency of our work was echoed by Ms. Janet Mwanyae from NACADA:

“Drug and substance abuse is one of the greatest threats to our youth. Initiatives like this give them hope and a brighter future.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Christopher Nyamawi, OCS Mtwapa, spoke about the broader impact of engaging youth:

“When we engage our youth in meaningful programs and foster inter-generational dialogue, we create safer neighborhoods free from crime and violence.”

Our Project Lead, Ms. Ann Mwangi, reminded everyone that real change requires community commitment:

“For this initiative to truly succeed, it must live beyond the project timeline. Parents and caregivers, walk hand-in-hand with us to support these young women. Together, we can create lasting change.”

From speeches to smiles, from dreams to plans, the day was more than a launch, it was the beginning of a journey. With the first cohort now beginning their six months of intensive training, we are not just teaching skills; we are building resilient, confident, and skilled young women who will shape the future of Kilifi South.

We invite our community, partners, and families to join us in this journey. When young women thrive, everyone benefits. Together, we are rewriting the story of our youth; one skill, one goal, and one dream at a time.

We are a youth-led organization that uses sports and art to inspire lifelong learning, empowerment, and social change among young people in Kenya’s Coastal region.
